The project – Le Siepi di San Giovanni

Rather than talking about a winery we would like to tell you about a family, the Zuffa’s. Two generations currently working at the project of restructuring the farm and the family real estate within the farm. An ambitious project that aims to enhancing the efforts of the past generations and create: an “Agriturismo” (almost completed), a Winery (in full operation), a Restaurant (“deliciously” operational), a large natural park with very interesting trails (most of them are already active). All this in addition to the regular agricultural activities (production of peaches, apricots and much more) that the Zuffa’s have always carried out in this area.
Let’s focus on the winery for a moment: “Le Siepi di San Giovanni“. We are in Romagna, in Fontanelice, about 60 km south of Bologna. Those who get here from Florence (which is only 100 km away!) will have the privilege of going through the very beautiful “Passo della Futa” (google map)!
The winery is located in a hilly area within the Regional Park “Parco Regionale della Vena del Gesso”, along the course of the Santerno River. Le Siepi di San Giovanni Winery mostly cultivates indigenous varietals with the exception of Cabernet Sauvignon, that on this land expresses all its power, and Merlot. They produce quality wines thanks, also, to the low yields per hectare and to the great respect the Zuffa’s have for the fruits obtained from their land. Their wines, both still, “frizzanti” and sparkling, are great value wines in an elegant, understated packaging.

40 ha of which 12 ha with vineyards

The Emilia Romagna region has always been known for producingf fresh, young, often sparkling wines. This is an area that produces a large quantity of wine. Yelds can be as high as 450 tons per hectar! Such production is, for a large part, dedicated to a mass consumption and wine does not always reach significant levels of quality. However, in recent decades , this area has produce great examples of quality productions aiming, above all, to preserve the uniqueness of the fruit of this land. These productions are often from vineyards on the hills, where the yields, unlike the floodplains, are much lower (around 100 tons / ha) and soil is of more differentiated origins, such varied soils strongly characterize the grape. The Winery “ Le Siepi di San Giovanni” is a perfect example of this type of modern productions: great attention to grape varietals, winemaking traditions of the area (where sparkling wines are at home) and the enhancement through agriculture, of the territory. Wines are clean, modern, fresh, with a great packaging and are definitely of good value for the money. The ideal business partner for “Le Siepi” is a distributor who seeks quality at a fair price, that is interested in learning about the specifications of a territory and passing on this experience when selling a bottle of wine.
